The 2nd ACAFP Food Safety Conference for Africa, held from December 12–14, 2023, in Accra, Ghana, gathered over 100 participants from five countries to discuss strategies under the theme, “Towards a Safer Food Supply for Africa.” Key elements included:

  • Sub-Themes: Topics included capacity building, food safety policies, nutrition security, technological advances, and One Health approaches.
  • Presentations:
    • Keynotes: Prof. Paul Amuna emphasized Africa's challenges in meeting global safety standards. Dr. Irene Akpeokhai discussed safety from farm to fork. Prof. Olusegun Obadina shared insights on microbial contamination in vegetables.
    • Plenary Sessions: Experts discussed FAO’s Strategic Framework, food safety governance, and policy integration within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
    • Panels: Discussions focused on collaboration among academics, SMEs, policymakers, and research institutes.
  • Workshops and Poster Sessions: Explored evidence-based decision-making tools like P-IMA and solutions for improving artisanal food safety practices.
  • Outcomes: The conference reinforced collaboration among African nations and stakeholders, underscoring innovation, education, and policy reform to mitigate foodborne illnesses and improve supply chains.

Closing Remarks: Organizers and participants celebrated the conference’s success, calling for further integration of food safety into national, continental, and global initiatives, supported by continuous stakeholder engagement.
