Dr. Stelinski is a 2-time graduate of our department, earning his M.S. in 2001 studying the IPM of two Rhagoletis species important in fruit crops, and then earning his PhD in 2005 studying the mechanisms underlying pheromone-based mating disruption. He continued to explore semiochemical research questions as a post-doc in the department before being hired in February 2007 as an tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida. He achieved the rank of full Professor in 2019 as a result of his excellent research record and extension program serving the citrus industry in Florida. Stelinski's research focuses on the development of integrated management strategies for insect pest control. Although citrus is the focal commodity for his current research program, he extensively collaborates with colleagues on research projects involving insect pests of temperate tree fruit, small fruit (both temperate and tropical), as well as in other agricultural commodities such as ornamental plants and vegetables.
His research interests include both principles-level fundamental questions as well as practical applied questions geared toward providing solutions to major problems facing a diversity of agricultural commodities. His philosophy is to meld basic and applied research as a single pursuit. His approach is to conduct research on the behavior and ecology of insects and subsequently develop biorational management solutions. He has been widely recognized for his creative and impactful work including election as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, 2022) and the Entomological Society of America (2023).
