Marielle Peschiera, a master’s student in the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability will have three years filled with professional experience, networking and travel thanks to a prestigious professional development program.
She has been named a member of the Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science (MS PHDs) initiative, which supports increasing diversity in Earth system science.
The MS PHDs initiative, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA, sponsors programs that provide minorities with:
- increased exposure to the Earth system science community, via participation in scientific conferences, mentoring relationships and virtual community activities
- professional skills (research, communication, teaching, etc.)
- information regarding future funding, education and career opportunities and resources
- networking opportunities with established Earth system science researchers and educators
- membership within a virtual community that facilitates networking with and collaboration among peers, junior- and senior-level researchers and educators
This year’s program will include attending the fall American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, followed by two more years of work with mentors, networking opportunities, and capstone activities at the National Academies in Washington, D.C.
Peschiera, from Puerto Rico, is one of the initial students to participate in the Michigan State University - University of Puerto Rico Partnership in Natural Resource and Conservation Studies. This summer she also was an MSU Demmer Scholar.
As a master’s student in fisheries and wildlife she will study the impacts of climate change and land use change on fish biodiversity and production in select freshwater systems in the United States, including rivers in Puerto Rico.
