This survey instrument, developed for the RSM2SNF project, is designed to collect detailed data from wholesale markets across Tanzania. The questionnaire is structured to gather insights on market operations, infrastructure, governance, and trader roles, with a specific focus on the value chains for tomatoes and green leafy vegetables (GLVs). Key features include:

  • Survey Modules:

    • Market geography and demographics.
    • Trader registration, fees, and membership in associations.
    • Governance structures and decision-making processes.
    • Food safety, hygiene practices, and waste disposal.
    • Seasonal variations in supply and demand.
  • Objectives:

    • Identify bottlenecks and opportunities in the tomato and GLV value chains.
    • Assess market infrastructure, such as water, sanitation, and electricity access.
    • Examine the role of trader associations in coordinating market activities.
    • Understand governance dynamics and their impact on market efficiency.
  • Special Focus Areas: Food safety practices, gender representation in leadership, and post-harvest loss management strategies.

The instrument is part of a collaborative research effort between the University of Dar es Salaam, Sokoine University of Agriculture, and Michigan State University, aiming to inform policy interventions that improve market efficiency and food security.
