March 20, 2013 - Laura Goddeeris

Recognizing that local governments have opportunities to support food systems that promote economic viability, equitable community development and environmental sustainability, CRFS partnered in a national survey to assess the status of current involvement. With funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, CRFS worked with the International City/County Management Association to develop and administer a comprehensive survey on the status of food-related policies, programs, partnerships and plans. A leading professional organization for local government management, ICMA offered the ability to reach all municipalities over 2,500 population and all counties, resulting in a total of nearly 2,000 responses across all 50 states. Survey results provide insight into the ways and lenses through which local governments engage in food systems, which may be of interest to good food advocates seeking municipal or county support for their efforts.

A full analysis of the results is included in ICMA's Municipal Year Book 2013, and is available for purchase.
