Featured Alumni

Our featured alumni, Emily Huening, earned her B.S. in Horticulture with a concentration in Landscape Design, Construction, and Management just over 5 years ago.  We asked her a few questions about degree and her career afterwards.

Why did you choose Horticulture and why MSU?

I chose MSU for their Landscape Architecture program, but eventually switched to Horticulture because I found that I most enjoyed the classes that started with HRT.

Where did you go after MSU?

I worked as a residential landscape designer at a firm in Metro Detroit for 3 years, then as Lead Horticulturist at a different firm for one year following that. I then took a position at the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association in 2016.

Describe your current work. What keeps you engaged in your work?

I currently work as the Director of Education/Certification at the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association. I enjoy staying up-to-date on all aspects of the industry, and supporting all sectors of our great Green Industry.

Any thoughts for current students?

Connect as much as possible with your professors and other students in the program. I remain in touch with many of the people I met as a Horticulture student at MSU, and it’s such a great community of people who are passionate about plants!
