EAST LANSING, Mich.  – Senior studio students at Michigan State University (MSU) dominated the 2012 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Student Career Day competition. The students, taught by April Allen and Eunsil Lee, assistant professors in the School of Planning, Design and Construction Management, swept the competition at the Michigan Design Center in Troy in April.

Competitors designed office/design studio spaces that reflected their individual styles and design philosophies.

“This year’s competition focused on the students’ personal style,” Allen said. “Through the understanding of elements and principles of design, the ability to demonstrate design expression through presentation skills, exhibit design knowledge through technical skills, and choose  appropriate finish and furniture selections, students presented projects unique to them.”

The MSU students swept the competition. Winners were:

  • First place—Stephanie Space, from Shepherd, Mich.
  • Second place—Colleen O’Leary, Riverview, Mich.
  • Third place—Nicholas Obeid, Troy, Mich.

Winners received a certificate and monetary prizes of $1,000, $600 and $400, respectively.  Participation was open to all students enrolled in an interior design program in Michigan.

“For MSU, winning all three places is quite an honor. It recognizes the interior design program and showcases the excellence of our program, faculty and students,” Allen said.
