Food industry management junior Rebecca Kost began drinking coffee at the age of three out of a sippy cup. The cup may have changed over the years, but her love of coffee didn’t.
As a sales intern at Paramount Coffee in Lansing, she focuses on selling coffee to non-traditional grocers such as Marshalls or Target. Kost said that each work day is different. She may be doing anything from sending samples of coffee, attending meetings or cupping coffee.
Coffee cupping is a technique used for observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee. Kost and another sales intern practice coffee cupping each week with Paramount Coffee’s chairman, CEO and resident expert in cupping, Angelo Oricchio.
Kost said that coffee cupping is her favorite part about the internship and she has never learned about coffee as in-depth as she has during the coffee cupping process.
“I think it’s really important to know your product well and it has been a really cool learning experience,” Kost said.
Kost said the internship has been eye-opening to what the sales industry is like.
“I’m looking to gain knowledge from the internship,” Kost said. “I’m not really sure what I want to do when I graduate so I think it’s a great starting point to get my feet in the water and, from there, see what else I want to learn.”- See more at: http://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2014/intern-spotlight-rebecca-kost/#sthash.BG74rbfA.dpuf
