Genetic selection and peaceful pig grouping

Researchers in the Department of Animal Science are studying genetic selection in pigs as it relates to welfare.

The team of Drs. Janice Siegford, Juan Pedro Steibel, Cathy Ernst, Ron Bates, Madonna Gemus-Benjamin and Sarah Ison is looking at the heritability of social behavior using genetic selection in a collaborative project between MSU and Scotland’s Rural College. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Pork Board and the Rackham Foundation.
