On Saturday, March 25, 2017, the Michigan State University Interior Design Student Organization hosted a full-day charrette on campus for interior design students from MSU, Central Michigan University, Western Michigan University and Adrian College.

At the start multi-school teams were formed, and their task was to redesign a basement retail space for a mid-century building located on Grand River Ave in East Lansing. The client, Sitou Akibode, asked that the design focus on retail incubation, as well as a meeting space for entrepreneurs, students and professionals.

Each group was given 6.5 hours to formulate a concept, devise a floor plan, a furniture plan, two elevations, one perspective and finish selection. At the end of the day, each group presented their design to a panel of judges (MaKensie Kentfield of Marx Moda and Jennifer Vaillancourt of NBS), the client and their peers.

The winners were awarded a scholarship prize from the MSU School of Planning, Design, and Construction. First place was awarded to team “Create” whose members included Maggie Persons (MSU), Meredith Remington (MSU) and Shannon Stockelman (WMU); and they each received $100. Second place was awarded to team “Bold Mid-Century Bunker” whose members included Mary Emerick (MSU), Abbey Noodle (MSU), Allyson Dykstra (WMU) and Ashley Walters (WMU); and they each received $50.
