During his 2015 State of the State address, Governor Rick Snyder gave special recognition to Kettering University student Harrison Ford for his involvement in FIRST Robotics. Ford participated in the robotics competition in his school and now mentors a high school team named Flint F.I.R.E.
Governor Snyder praised Ford for his role as a mentor and encouraging students to pursue STEM related fields. Ford’s interest in STEM was cultivated early in high school when he attended a Michigan State University (MSU) summer program.
Ford is a former participant in the Multicultural Apprenticeship Program (MAP) at MSU. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) hosts the program annually as part of its Pre-College Summer Youth Programs.
MAP is a four-week summer experience designed to expose high school students to educational and career opportunities in agricultural, food sciences, natural resources, and related fields. MAP participants are students who exhibit an interest and aptitude in math and science. Students from around the state participate free of charge and live on campus for the full four weeks to get a true college experience.
“Harrison was an excellent student and during his participation in MAP his interest in STEM related fields was enhanced. Harrison was the type of student that soaked up the experience and learned as much as he could over the experience,” said Leo Savala, director of undergraduate diversity in the CANR.
The program fosters an appreciation for math and science by offering field trips, leadership seminars, and social activities. MAP also gives students hands-on experience in agriculture and natural resources related fields by pairing them with a CANR faculty member to work on a research project.
