There will be a Morrill Act Sesquicentennial event taking place from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. April 26 at The Rock on Farm Lane.

Named after U.S. Congressman Justin Morrill, the Morrill Act was signed in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln. The act democratized higher education for all Americans by granting each state land to establish a public college, revolutionizing the way institutions shared knowledge.

Founded in 1855, MSU was the nation’s pioneer land-grant university and the prototype for the entire land-grant system.

The sesquicentennial event will feature an MSU Dairy Store ice cream giveaway of a new flavor, Morrill Mint Madness, which is creme de menthe ice cream with a butter fudge swirl; free T-shirts and actors portraying Morrill and Lincoln.
