MSU Forestry alumnus and Michigan DNR Forester Mike Smalligan (MS ’07) certified almost a dozen MSU Forestry Club students this spring. As certified American Tree Farm System inspectors, MSU Forestry grads can provide numerous services to landowners, including professional evaluations of woodlands and on-site advice on forest management. This certification process helps keep privately-owned woods healthy. It also creates an essential connection between professional foresters and landowners to help set goals and action plans for protecting the legacy of their forests.
Additionally, Smalligan was awarded the 2017 National Leadership Award from ATFS. His dedication to the ATFS certification, as well as his efforts with Wheels to Woods, Forests for Fish and others have made him an exceptional volunteer and advocate for forests.
