Spartan agri-marketing team places fourth in national competition

Earlier this month, the Michigan State University (MSU) Student National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) team brought home an impressive fourth place finish from the 2014 NAMA Competition.

Earlier this month, the Michigan State University (MSU) Student National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) team brought home an impressive fourth place finish from the 2014 NAMA Competition.

The Spartan Agri-Marketing team continued its track record of reaching the finals of the National Student Marketing Competition. This year, nine student NAMA team members traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, to bring home a fourth place finish in the marketing competition. This marks the fourth year in five that the Spartan team has reached the finals.

Members of the team who competed in the competition included:

  • Jasper Cunningham, a senior majoring in agribusiness management from Ravenna
  • Katelyn Horning, a senior majoring in agribusiness management and animal science from Manchester
  • Tyler Hoopes, a senior majoring in agribusiness management from Portage
  • Spencer Short, a sophomore majoring in agribusiness management from Brighton
  • Addie Spolyar, a junior majoring in crop and soil sciences from Jonesville
  • Kelly White, a junior majoring in environmental studies and agriscience from Jonesville
  • Kelsey Vanderploeg, a junior majoring in food industry management from Kalamazoo

Other student NAMA team members who played critical roles in developing the marketing plan and contributing to the team’s success include Ricky Southward, a sophomore from Ravenna; Nicole Pinage, a sophomore from Temperance; Liz Wittenbach, a sophomore from Belding; Sarah Michalek, a senior from Deckerville; and Sam Ward, a senior from Jackson.

Laura Cheney, associate professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics, is the team’s advisor. Two professional advisors, Stephanie Lelo and Melissa Rogers from GreenStone Farm Credit Services also help with the team.

The MSU NAMA team has received financial support from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) Alumni Association, GreenStone Farm Credit Services, Michigan Farm News and BASF.
