A trilateral academic partnership in the dairy value chain, funded by USAID and the USDA FAS, was implemented at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in Malawi with MSU and Tamil Nadu University of Animal and Veterinary Science (TANUVAS) in India.

FSHN faculty member Deepa Thiagarajan was part of the leadership team. The goal of the project was to improve the quality of tertiary education and foster research aligned with national development priorities in the dairy sector in Malawi.

The project aimed at building capacity in LUANAR to provide practical knowledge to graduates and dairy industry stakeholders and to enable them to effectively engage in all areas along the dairy value chain, from animal nutrition, reproduction, health and dairy production to dairy processing, value addition, and marketing of milk and other dairy products.

The education, training and targeted intervention activities have laid  a strong foundation for future improvements among the smallholder dairy farmers in Malawi.
